Five working households received news in recent days that they had won the lottery – the Jackson Hole housing lottery, that is.

Over the past few weeks, 134 working households -- which included 185 adults and 75 children -- submitted applications for five affordable housing units offered by the Jackson/Teton County Affordable Housing Department. Of the 134 applications, 11 were submitted by critical service providers.

“The enormous volume of applicants for these units represents the high demand for affordable homes in the valley,” April Norton, Housing Director, said. “Providing housing – whether through home ownership or home rental – stabilizes our community. By keeping hard working families close to work and schools, we encourage support of local businesses, and protect our open spaces and scenic vistas by keeping commuters off our roads.”

The lottery process gives priority status to applicants based on their household size and for being employed in Teton County for four or more years and/or being a critical service provider.

This round’s lottery winners include at least two critical service providers, as well as some familiar faces in the local service and health industries.

Of the five units available in the recent lotteries, two are rental units at The Grove and three are ownership units. Winning ownership applicants will work with the Housing Department and lenders to complete the home purchase process and are expected to be able to move in over the next few months.

For more information on the lottery process or affordable housing in Teton County, please contact the Jackson/Teton County Affordable Housing Department at 732-0867.
