Recycling Staff Recognized for Tireless Work in the Midst of 'Chaos'

The list of challenges for staff at Jackson Community Recycling over the summer was long: Recycling tonnages were up 72 percent for July, August and September; staffing was short by 50 percent; remodeling construction was underway; and in the middle of it all, a bailing machine went down for a week.

“I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the recycling operations staff for their incredible dedication and work over the past several months under difficult circumstances,” said Heather Overholser, Integrated Solid Waste and Recycling superintendent. “I feel honored and privileged to have such a fantastic team.”

At its Tuesday, workshop, the Teton County Board of County Commissioners joined Overholser in recognizing and thanking four Recycling Center employees for their exceptional work.

Two employees -- Lane Raper, Senior Recycling Operator, and Chris Cook, Recycling Operator – had been tirelessly doing the work of five to maintain smooth operations, Overholser said. Administrative Assistant Mari Allan Hanna frequently stepped beyond her day-to-day duties to help with tasks outside of her job description, all the while delivering service with a smile.

Meanwhile, Kent Jasperson, Solid Waste and Recycling Manager, “orchestrated a way through the chaos every day,” Overholser said. “We always joke about how Kent can do anything, and it’s true. One night he camped out at the Recycling Center so he could fix the bailer and have it ready to go when his staff came in, in the morning.”

“I have a really good crew and these people really stepped up beyond capabilities of what should be expected,” Jasperson told commissioners.

Commissioners shook hands with each employee and thanked them personally for their dedication. “The Teton County government’s most valuable assets are its employees, and the Recycling Center staff exemplifies that,” said Mark Newcomb, vice chair. “We really appreciate their dedication through a difficult summer, and we thank them for their continued service on behalf of Jackson Hole.”
