Future CERT Training Ideas

Here are some ideas for upcoming trainings:

  • Expedient Flood Training Course
A short course (45 minutes classroom time, some extra hands-on time) on fighting floods and creating sandbag dikes. Covers everything from filling sandbags to the logistical needs of a sandbagging team. If there are any handypersons out there, let us know. There are also plans for building simple sandbag filling stations here.

  • Triage Practicum
A one night course focusing on triage and assessing life-threatening conditions.

  • Community Resource Inventory
A one night course where CERT members brainstorm on resources available to them if they were isolated within their neighborhood such as generators, amatuer radio operators, medically trained personnel, etc. Members will take these ideas back to their communities/homeowner's associations to see if other non-CERT members would want to take part in this resource inventory.

  • Basic Incident Command System
Taking the Incident Command training that we are offering in June to the next level. This course focuses on individual responders within the ICS.

  • CERT Field Day
This is something that Brian, Jason, and myself have been kicking around for a while. Other communities hold a whole day of CERT activities at least once a year, and we might want to try that out here in Teton County. It would ideally be a family picnic type atmosphere with stations for CERT members to rotate through that focus on different skills. We will need some help pulling it together, though, so if you are interested let us know.

  • Housefire and Wildland Fire Safety
A short talk on facts about housefires and wildfires, plus activities for you to mitigate these risks at your home and work.

Email or call Rich at 732-8594 if any of these trainings would interest you, or let us know what trainings you would like to see for CERT.

Did You Know
Do I need flood insurance?

No matter where you live, the answer is usually "yes". Flooding is generally not covered by homeowner's or renter's insurance policies, and the premiums are relatively low. Ask your insurance agent, or check the National Flood Insurance Program website at FloodSmart.gov for more information.
