Small Claims Court
Small Claims Court is an informal court which people can use to sue for money up to $5,000 without an attorney. Small Claims is a division of the Circuit Court, and the Circuit Court Judge will hear your case. While small claims are official Court cases, the hearings are designed to be quick and relaxed, to allow consumers and business people an inexpensive method of settling minor claims.
Jurisdiction is determined by where the Defendant can be served. Thus, to file a Small Claims suit in Teton County, the Defendant must be able to be personally served, at either a residence or a place of employment, in Teton County.
You must provide a mailing address so documents and correspondence can be mailed to both parties involved in the Small Claims action. You are also required to provide telephone numbers for both parties involved in the Small Claims action.
