Hikers` Checklist

10 Essentials

  1. Topographical map or guidebook and compass.
  2. *Water
  3. *Extra clothing and raingear
  4. Sun protection: sunglasses, sunscreen, lip balm, hat or visor
  5. Pocket knife
  6. First aid/emergency kit
  7. Fire starter kit: waterproof matches in a waterproof container, candle and dry paper
  8. Flashlight or headlamp (with extra batteries and bulb)
  9. Extra food
  10. Miscellaneous: bandana, toilet paper, zip lock bags, whistle
Other suggested items:
  1. Insect repellant
  2. Well designed daypack
  3. Comfortable, sturdy hiking boots
  4. Moleskin
  5. Camera and film
  6. Binoculars
  7. Field guides
  8. Warm hat and gloves
  9. Water purification
  10. Pepper spray
*Always carry plenty of water. A minimum of two quarts of water are recommended on all Teton County/Jackson Parks and Recreation Department hikes. Warmer conditions, rugged terrain and length of hike will necessitate carrying additional water. Take drinks often to stay hydrated.

*Weather can change quickly! Be prepared!
