SPRING CLEAN UP WEEK MAY 5th – 10th

Jackson, WY, May, 2014.  Spring has sprung and it’s time to spruce up our valley as the melting snow reveals the winter’s accumulation of trash and debris.  This year’s community wide event is once again being guided by conservation principals and sustainable practices.  Read on for more information on:
1. Rotary Clubs Spring Clean-Up Day;
2. Compostable Yard Waste Program;
3. Extended hours and special rates at Trash Transfer Station and the Recycling Center; and,
4. Spring Burn Week.

1.   Rotary Club Community Spring Clean-Up Day:  The central event of the week is the 46th annual Community Spring Clean Up on Saturday, May 10th.  Sponsored by Rotary Club of Jackson Hole, “Spring Clean Up is truly a community event involving several service organizations, individual volunteers, and businesses that donate supplies, equipment and labor,” said Bob Norton, Chairman of the Annual community Spring Clean-Up Committee.  Meeting time is 9:00am and meeting places are:
Town Square; The Wilson Community Center; and The Hoback Market.
• Coffee, doughnuts, and pastries provided.  All volunteers welcome.  Dress appropriately for weather; bring gloves and sunscreen.  Orange bags and vests will be provided.  Free barbeque picnic lunch at Town Square from 11:30 to 12:30 provided for all volunteers!

2.  Compostable Yard Waste Program:  Increased composting and fuel savings are the impetus driving residential yard clean-up in the valley.

Compostable Yard Waste Bags and Town Curbside Pickup:  Again this year, Teton County Integrated Solid Waste & Recycling (ISWR) has teamed up with the Town of Jackson and Terra Firma Organics to coordinate a community-wide yard waste collection event to encourage the use of compostable yard waste bags and reusable containers instead of plastic bags for the annual Town of Jackson free curbside yard waste collection.

Pick up free compostable yard waste bags at the following locations:
• Jackson Town Hall, 150 Pearl Avenue, 8 am – 5 pm
• Recycling Center, 3270 S. Adams Canyon Drive, 9 am – 6 pm
• Eco-Fair, May 10, Snow King Ball field, RRR Booth, 12 – 5 pm.

Fill these big, durable compostable yard waste bags with leaves, grass and twigs only – No Trash or Dog Poop!  Trash is extremely difficult and time consuming to remove and yard waste cannot be composted if trash is present.  Please keep it clean so that this valuable resource is composted rather than thrown in the landfill.  The success of this program depends on your efforts, thank you.  “We are excited about this initiative,” says Mac Dukart, ISWR Recycling Outreach Coordinator.  “This program continues to grow and is succeeding in diverting tons of organics from our waste stream - this year we expect to distribute 5,000 free compostable bags this year. We hope this service will help raise awareness about the importance of ongoing community-wide yard waste collection in the valley.  ”

Town of Jackson residents: place your compostable bags (plastic bags will not be picked up) on the curb by 8 am Monday, May 12th – this will be a one day only yard waste curbside collection.  Other easy to empty reusable containers such as trash cans may also be used for yard waste.  Larger limbs can be placed next to compostable bags.  “We wanted to give town of Jackson residents a little extra time over the weekend to collect their yard waste and get it on the curb by Monday morning,” said Larry Pardee, Town of Jackson Public Works Director.  “By having the curbside pickup on Monday instead of Saturday, we are saving the Town of Jackson money in overtime for our Public Works crew.”

Teton County Residents:  deliver your yard waste either loose or in compostable bags free of charge to the Teton County Trash Transfer Station during Clean-Up Week May5 -10, and on Monday, May 12th.  To qualify for free yard waste disposal, residents must bring it in loose, or in the compostable yard waste bags.  If residential yard waste is delivered in plastic bags, it will be disposed of as trash, and the customer will be charged the Spring Clean Up rate of $55 per ton.

“We are thrilled to team up with the Town of Jackson to offer these compostable yard waste bags as a sustainable, convenient alternative to plastic bags for curbside yard waste disposal,” said Heather Overholser, Teton County ISWR Division Chief.  In previous years, town residents have typically used large plastic garbage bags to hold their yard waste for curbside collection on Spring Clean-Up Day.  Filled with organic material that could be composted, the bags were ultimately sent to the landfill because town crews didn’t have time to open and inspect them.

Terra Firma Organics, Inc., which processes and composts organics at the trash transfer station, will again be a major player in this year’s Spring Clean-Up.  Dane Buk, owner of Terra Firma, has offered an in-kind donation of time, equipment and expertise to receive the yard waste collected by Public Works crews in a staging area at the Rodeo Grounds.  On May 12th, Terra Firma will grind yard waste at the Rodeo Grounds parking lot and then transport the collected yard waste to the trash transfer station where it will be composted on site.  Swing by to see Terra Firma’s monster grinder in action!  During last year’s Spring Clean Up, 86 tons of yard waste was collected and composted, a 23% increase from 2012.  The Town of Jackson enjoyed significant fuel and staff time savings as a result of using the Rodeo grounds parking lot as a staging area for this Spring Clean Up effort.

Please note: The Rodeo Grounds is not a public drop off.  Only Town of Jackson Public Works crews and Terra Firma Organics will be using this area to drop off of residential yard waste.

3.  Extended Hours and Reduced Fees:  During Spring Clean Up week, the hours at the Teton County Trash Transfer Station will be:
• 8am to 5pm Monday, May 5th through Friday, May 9th; and from 8am to 5pm, on Saturday, May 10th.

During this week, the Trash Transfer Station will accept the general public’s residential trash at one half the existing rate ($55/ton). To receive the discounted rate, these materials must be delivered to the Trash Transfer Station by individual parties; special rates do not apply to businesses.  The reduced rate does not apply to tires or refrigeration units, which will be charged the normal rates due to the added costs of disposal of these items and Freon removal.

Community Recycling Center Specials:  The Recycling Center is offering electronic waste recycling for half-off the regular rate of 40 cents per pound during Spring Clean-Up Week.  Electronic waste is accepted at the Recycling Center from 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. Monday – Friday - no appointment needed!  Household hazardous waste will also be accepted at half-off the regular rates during the May 6 collection date – appointment required.  Please call 733-7678 to make an appointment.

4.  Spring Burn Week, as Declared by the Jackson Town Council:  Saturday May 3 – Saturday May 10:  Please call 733-2331 prior to burning.  Only clean wood, branches and leaves may be burned, no trash.
