Source Reduction

By choosing products with less packaging waste, we can save landfill space and resources - and save money, too! Source reduction (precycling) stops waste before it happens.

  • Minimal Packaging
    • Bulk Items-dry foods, pet foods, large-size packages.
    • Concentrates-laundry detergent, frozen juices
    • No packaging needed-produce, hardware, utensils
    • Buying the "economy size" can save you money and minimize packaging.
    • Avoid "convenience foods" with extra packaging.

  • The following packaging can be recycled at Jackson Community Recycling: Glass bottles & jars, aluminum or steel (tin) cans and some plastics.

  • Recycled Packaging: Many products now come in recycled containers, for example: cereals, crackers, cookies, laundry detergent, and canned goods. Look for the recycle symbol on the container.

  • Time for a Refill: Re-use or re-fill containers such as glass or sturdy plastic. Bring a coffee mug instead of using a disposable cup at the deli.

  • Bring Back Your Bag: Most local grocery stores will pay up to five cents for each bag you bring back and re-use. Buy a canvas or string bag for regular use. The average American uses one thousand plastic shopping bags a year!

  • Use Re-usables Not Disposables: Whenever possible, avoid products which are designed to be thrown away, such as paper and plastic dishes, disposable razors, lighters, disposable diapers. Use cloth napkins, rechargeable batteries, thermos bottles and other re-usables.

Did you know that packaging accounts for half the volume and 30% of the weight in America`s trash? Eight cents for every food dollar you spend goes for packaging.
